Fabio Carvalho was recalled from his loan at RB Leipzig early and returned to Liverpool on New Years Day.
The youngster was introduced to Liverpool’s squad last season after moving from Fulham.
This was for a reported fee of around £5million with £2.7million in further add-ons.
He had a solid debut season for the Reds, appearing 22 times and scoring three goals.
During the 2022/23 season, Liverpool massively struggled to get results.
This meant that Klopp often opted experience rather than banking on youngsters to pull the Reds through.
This resulted in Carvalho getting less playtime than both he and Klopp wanted for him.
Hence why, in summer, the Portugal international was shipped off to the Bundesliga.
Whilst at Leipzig, the 21-year-old made 15 appearances in all competitions.
He even won the Super Cup during his short time with the German club.
Why Fabio Carvalho was recalled from his loan
Leipzig sporting director, Rouven Schroder, has spoken on Liverpool’s decision to recall Carvalho and claimed ‘both parties had expected more from his time here.’
“We were able to sign a young player with plenty of potential over the summer in Fábio Carvalho,” Schroder said via RB Leipzig’s official website.
“Fábio was able to quickly integrate himself here, but both parties had expected more from his time here – especially Fábio in terms of his playing time.
“Due to the quality and competition within our squad at his position, we are unable to guarantee this for him.
“We held several discussions over the last days and in the end, decided to end his loan early.
We would like to thank Fábio for his efforts at RBL and wish him all the best for the future.”
It feels as if the recall of Carvalho was mutual with everyone involved agreeing on the outcome.
The 21-year-old’s future is still bright and he shouldn’t be affected by this minor setback.
What could be next for Fabio Carvalho
Since Fabio Carvalho has now been recalled, his future almost lies in the balance with no guaranteed destination for the youngster.
With Mohamed Salah absent from the squad for more than a month, Klopp could look to Carvalho to fill his place.
He could also be loaned out yet again in order to continue his development rather than being consistently side-lined
Another loan is also quite likely as once Salah returns from AFCON, Carvalho’s gametime would be hindered.
Fabrizio Romano has already suggested that the likes of Leicester and Southampton are lining up to take the youngster on loan.
Wherever the 21-year-old ends up, he will be hoping to showcase the talent he clearly possesses.
