Wataru Endo put into another important shift against Newcastle United as Liverpool battled to a 4-2 win.
The Japan skipper has grown in confidence and assurity in the past weeks.
He is now deservedly viewed as an important cog in Jurgen Klopp’s title-challenging side.
However, his contributions will have to be cut-off for now as he partakes in the Asia games.
Japan are one of the favourites for the entire competition.
Therefore, the 30-year-old could be gone until past 10 February – when the final is set to take place.
Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Wataru Endo admitted to some bittersweet feelings leaving Liverpool while he’s in such good form:
“Yes, a little bit actually,” Endo said when asked about his mixed emotions.
“But you know I need to play for my national team as well.”
“But I think the last few games I’ve played for this club, I have shown why I am here, so I go to Qatar, hopefully get a good result and then come back here.”
Wataru Endo leaves after a good performance against the Magpies, leaving the Reds three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Wataru Endo is enjoying life at Liverpool
Of the team’s fortunes in 2024, Endo said:
“It was a huge win for us and a good start for 2024,” he began.
“We knew before the game that Newcastle is a very physical team, so we were ready to suffer.
“I always try to get the ball, so we did that well actually in my opinion.”
“I’m really enjoying playing football in front of the Liverpool fans at Anfield.
“I just try to do my best in every game and I’m so happy to be here.”
“We are feeling great but this is just the start of the new year, so we have to stay focused and just try to get ready for every game coming.”
