Liverpool are bit light on defensive players going into January due to several unfortunate injuries to key players.

The first big injury they had at the back wasn’t even when they were in action as Andy Robertson suffered a shoulder injury whilst on international duty for Scotland against Spain.

He is still out with that injury but the hope is Robertson will be available at some point in January.

Over a month ago now Joel Matip suffered a season-ending injury in Liverpool’s dramatic 4-3 victory against Fulham.

Ibrahima Konate has been playing consistently for Matip now with help from youngster Jarell Quansah.

The most recent problem Jurgen Klopp has had to deal with came at left-back yet again.

Kostas Tsimikas, who was covering for Robertson, was in great form but he got bundled over by Bukayo Saka against Arsenal.

He went down in a heap of pain and it was confirmed that the anguish was due to a collarbone injury which is set to rule him out for a long time.

So now one of Klopp’s central defensive options in Joe Gomez is their first-choice left-back however he has been used much more as a full-back this season and has impressed.

The issues is now depth with Jarell Quansah the only back-up option for the central area whilst there is no senior left-back options behind Gomez.

Liverpool may keep Nat Phillips as cover at the back

In the summer Liverpool decided to loan out Nat Phillips to Scottish giants but they only agreed to a deal which lasted until January.

He struggled for game time under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hence why the loan hasn’t been extended.

Now according to a report Liverpool could decide to keep the 26-year-old for the second half of the season.

He has been a huge help to Klopp before as he was a key member of the side who finished third place in the 2020/21 season.

Phillips could be involved against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round this upcoming weekend.
