Barcelona want to bring Thiago Alcantara back to the Camp Nou this January.
Xavi Hernandez’s side have endured a middling La Liga campaign. Barcelona are fourth – 10 points behind leaders Reak Madrid and Girona.
However, Thiago is seen as the ideal option for the central midfield role with Gavi’s injury, according to The Mirror.
Gavi suffered a serious ACL injury while playing for Spain in November and is now likely out for the rest of the season.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently hinted that the Catalan club would attempt to bring in a temporary replacement for Gavi:
“If we manage to make the (financial) fair play work, the idea is to have another midfielder to compensate for the loss of Gavi,” Laporta said in December.
“It would be a loan until the end of the season, like we did years ago with Edgar Davids, for example.”
“I think before the end of the year we can create the space for a couple of deals we are working on.”
Barcelona wants Thiago
Thiago is reportedly on the top of Barcelona’s shortlist. The 32-year-old knows the club’s ways having come through La Masia, the world-renowned academy.
Despite his injury record, Xavi would still appreciate his experience and know-how in the middle of the park.
However, manager Jurgen Klopp is believed to want to keep Thiago as the second-half of the season unfolds.
The Reds are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League and are competing on all cup fronts.
Thiago has not played for Liverpool since April last year, so his return can only be a boost to an already strong side.
The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Therefore, even if Barcelona do not prise Thiago away this January, it’s likely we are seeing the last season of the 32-year-old at Anfield.
