Liverpool advanced through to the fourth round of the FA Cup against Arsenal after an own goal and a late strike from Luis Diaz.
The Reds were on the back foot in the first half as Arsenal looked for an opener but The Gunners didn’t take advantage of the two clear openings they had.
Jurgen Klopp’s side still managed to rattle the bar in the first half through Trent Alexander-Arnold but they changed their approach in the second half.
The change brought Liverpool much more success with attacking the Arsenal backline and they came close to breaking the deadlock on a couple of occasions through Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.
However, the goals came late on through a Jakub Kiwior own goal and Diaz which gave Klopp a very big smile as his alterations to the set-up at half-time had paid off.
Trent Alexander-Arnold explains what Jurgen Klopp changed at half-time
After the game, the Liverpool vice-captain, who had yet another splendid performance, spoke to the BBC and he went into detail about what Klopp had asked them to change in the second half.
He said: “We dug deep with two late goals. We changed things around at half-time and we came out and played football, created our chances. The change of system made an impact for us.
“I think there were times in the first half where we were a little bit naive, where we’ve got caught playing out from the back and they’ve had their chances from our mistakes and maybe a sloppy pass here and there.”
Alexander-Arnold continued: “They’re a high-pressing team and they’re bound to do that. We stuck with the way that we wanted to play, we have an identity, we want to play football and use players’ strengths with the frontline that we had, obviously Harvey wanted to get him on the ball.
‘Then we’ve got Darwin and Lucho as well with speed, so we’re playing the balls in behind and giving them what they wanted as well.
“We mixed it up, Darwin went a little bit wider and Cody went in the centre – I think that really made a difference.
“We were able to use Darwin’s speed one-on-one with their full-back and he created a lot for us in the second half.”
This win is a big boost for the Liverpool side as they will now get their Winter break instead of having to play in a replay at Anfield.
The fourth round draw will be before the last game of the round on Monday and the Red’s will see who they have up next in the FA Cup.
