Joe Gomez was in fine form as he helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet against Arsenal on Sunday evening.

With the match billed as the fixture of the weekend, it certainly did not disappoint.

While Liverpool were under siege for periods in the first-half, they were able to weather the storm.

In the second-half, the Reds’ experience and know-how shone through.

They were able to finish off their chances in the critical moments, with a Jakub Kiwior own goal and a Luis Diaz thunderbolt ensuring a 2-0 win for Liverpool.

What did Joe Gomez say?

One man who contributed greatly to Liverpool’s clean sheet is Joe Gomez.

The 26-year-old has returned to the levels that saw him win 23 of 28 appearances while helping to keep 13 clean sheets during the Premier League winning campaign of 2019/20.

Speaking post-match, Gomez insists that the Reds are not getting overexcited despite remaining in four competitions at this stage:

“We don’t want to get giddy. We’re all just full of desire and want to make the best out of the season,” Gomez began via SABC Sport.

“All we can do is take it one game at a time. I know it’s a cliche, but there’s desire and we have a platform to build on.”

“We can’t take that for granted, as we know with last season it’s not always plain-sailing and we went through rough patches but we built from it and learnt from it.”

“So, we have to keep at it and see where it takes us.”

Joe Gomez largely kept key Arsenal man Bukayo Saka queit during the clash.

Despite playing at left-back, he did not look out of place and Saka had a troublesome time down the left flank.

Gomez was keen to praise the England international after the game while explaining what makes him so challenging to defend against:

“He’s a top player, a direct winger. It’s not often the case these days but he’s one that will stay wide to pick up the ball and drive at you.”

It was tough. I knew it was going to be having played him so recently but yeah, great team performance, we all dug deep,” Gomez added.

“It’s different at left back! It’s been a challenge to adapt. Small, minor differences that maybe aren’t noted, maybe how you receive the ball and so on.”

“But people at the club know me now, they know I will give my all. I’ve been here long enough now but I’m grateful to play for the club.”
