Wataru Endo was the subject of some transfer speculation after it emerged that Marseille had made a bid for the Japan international.
The Ligue 1 side, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, offered a reported €14 million (£11.8 million) to allow Endo to leave Anfield.
However, the Reds promptly rejected the offer, with the main rationale being that there was not exactly a surplus of quality No.6’s in the current market to replace the 31-year-old.
Endo only joined Liverpool from VfB Stuttgart last August for around £16.2 million and had a commendable debut season, making 43 appearances across all competitions and playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup triumph
Endo was initially seen as a “stop-gap” signing following the departures of key midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
Despite some initial skepticism, he quickly established himself as a reliable option in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, showcasing his defensive capabilities and work ethic.
His versatility and consistency made him an asset, especially during a transitional phase for Liverpool.
But there have been some whisperings that Arne Slot desires a different kind of profile at the base of his midfield.
While the ‘transfer window’ for Liverpool will only really get underway now in August, it does some cast some doubt over the Japan skipper’s long-term future at the club.
Which Premier League side believes Wataru Endo is attainable?
The West Ham Way, who regularly and reliably shares exclusive West Ham news, has reported that the Hammers are eyeing up Wataru Endo.
Despite the rejected bid from Marseille, the London club are said to be exploring a move with technical director Tim Steidten, spearheading the desire to bring the Japanese midfielder to London Stadium.
Steidten, who was formerly working in similar role with Bayer Leverkusen, wants to add Endo to Julen Lopetegui’s team this summer because he was a fan of the player during his time in Germany.
It is even claimed that Liverpool could sell if their €15 million asking price is satisfied and the 31-year-old’s wages are in West Ham’s means.
Endo would also satisfy the desire of the West Ham management to add an Asian star to the team in order to expand the team’s reach throughout Asia.
The Japan international has almost made himself into a cult hero, especially with his performances in some of the big games like Manchester City at Anfield last term.
While it would be a shame to see him leave so soon, sometimes progress forward comes at a cost.
