Newcastle United reportedly make major decision in effort to keep Anthony Gordon at club

It seems that Newcastle United are making some serious moves to try and ensure Anthony Gordon remains at St James’ Park amid Liverpool interest.

It seems that Newcastle United are willing to fight to keep hold of Anthony Gordon this summer.

This week, links reignited between Liverpool and the 23-year-old after things had settled down for the past while.

Gordon had a standout season with Newcastle in 2023/24, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists in 35 Premier League.

His energetic style and ability to play across the front line make him a valuable addition, particularly as Liverpool could seek to refresh its attacking options.

Gordon, who initially trained at Liverpool’s academy before moving to Everton and later Newcastle, has expressed admiration for Liverpool before.

His boyhood idol, Steven Gerrard, and his fondness for the club make him an attractive prospect.

Newcastle faced pressure to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by the end of June, they were forced to consider selling some of their valuable assets, including Gordon.

Hence, the Reds saw a ‘unique market opportunity’ and entered into talks with Newcastle United, but numerous reported issues like the inclusion of Jarell Quansah in the deal as well as the base price made the Anfield club decide against making a move.

According to various reports Liverpool have not really lost interest in Gordon and a move could manifest itself this summer.

But not if Newcastle United can do anything about it of course.

Newcastle to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract imminently

The Magpies are set to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract when returns from his summer break next week.

This is according to the Athletic, who state that there are ‘internal fears’ at St James’ Park that Anthony Gordon has had his head turned by Liverpool’s interest.

The PSR deadline by June made the club contemplate selling one of their key players, but they opted to instead part ways with Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson for a combined fee of close to £60m.

Eddie Howe has already made it clear that he and the club have no intention of losing their star man:

“He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.”

“He’s such an important player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody.”

“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions.”

“In those last few weeks [of June] it was very, very difficult. The rules forced us to do things we didn’t want to do, we didn’t want to lose any of the players sold.”

Of course, want managers want and the reality is often different.

It seems that the situation remains fluid for now, and it will be interesting to see how Gordon reacts to any forthcoming contract offer.

He currently earns a reported £60,000 a week at the Geordie club, with a deal that until 2026.
