Newcastle United ‘open negotiations’ for a reported Liverpool target

David Ornstein has reported that Newcastle United are making moves in the transfer market for a Liverpool-linked defender.

It seems that Newcastle United may be able to get one back at Liverpool after all the Anthony Gordon talk.

Links with Anthony Gordon and Liverpool have been reignited this week, and as a result, the Magpies are reportedly preparing a contract extension for the 23-year-old.

Gordon is yet to return to Newcastle having been afforded a longer summer break due to Euro 2024.

Additionally, it’s already clear that Eddie Howe wants a defender as Joe Gomez was offered to Newcastle United in the Gordon talks.

The Magpies navigated a tricky period at the end of June, where Premier League Profit and Sustainability regulations caused them to contemplate selling Gordon to the Reds.

However, it seems those financial issues are thing of the past for the Geordie club.

At least, according to David Ornstein, who has reported that Newcastle are now making moves in the transfer window.

What did David Ornstein report on Newcastle?

The Athletic journalist has reported that Eddie Howe’s side has open talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that the England international is a player that the Reds have been ‘scouting the player for a long time.’

Marc Guehi’s 2023/24 season was impressive both at Crystal Palace and with the England national team. For Palace, Guehi was a key player in their defense, making 25 Premier League appearances and featuring in additional cup matches.

He did have a knee injury at the turn of the year that kept him out for 13 games, which makes his 25 appearances even more impressive.

At Euro 2024, Guehi stepped up as a reliable option for England, especially in the absence of regular starter Harry Maguire.

He played almost of the tournament, forming a formidable partnership with John Stones. Guehi’s defensive skills were crucial, as he helped England achieve some of the best defensive statistics in the tournament.

Ornstein writes:

“Guehi is high on the recruitment lists at a number of Europe’s biggest clubs — but Newcastle are the first to enter meaningful talks as they pursue what would be regarded a significant coup.”

“Palace received Newcastle’s approach this week and if agreements can be reached it will give Eddie Howe’s men a huge lift ahead of the new season.”

The centre-back’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in 2026 and so far there has been no sign of him extending those terms, which may encourage Palace to entertain a sale now.”

At 24, Guehi is the ideal age to come in and reinforce Liverpool’s defensive line.

Off the back of his Euro 2024 campaign, Palace will feel entitled to a big transfer fee.
