Liverpool currently have two exceptional goalkeepers in Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Despite previous reports claiming Kelleher might be leaving Anfield this summer, the 25-year old is keen to fight for minutes under his belt this upcoming season under new manager Arne Slot.
However, in the past Liverpool have not always been blessed with the best options when it came to goalkeepers.
WHICH PLAYERS COULD LIVERPOOL HAVE SIGNED?
John Achterberg has served Liverpool Football Club for 15 years before his departure earlier this year.
In a podcast episode hosted by Liverpool legend John Aldridge, Achterberg revealed four players he urged Liverpool to sign over the years.
“When Roy (Hodgson) was looking for a number two goalie, I said we need to take Thomas Sorensen,” said Achterberg.
His reasoning was simple: “He was an experienced Danish international. That was the level I was looking at.” explained Achterberg.
However, the club decided to sign Brad jones from Middlesbrough instead. Interestingly, this was not Achterberg’s first choice for a goalkeeper.
“My first goalie I said to (Damien) Comolli was (Manuel) Neuer at Schalke, I said he would be good for us, but then he said he’s going to Bayern.”
It looks like Liverpool were interested in signing a young Manual Neuer. The Liverpool goalkeeping staff were unearthing the brightest talents.
“The second one I said (Samir) Handanovic who was at Udinese, and he said he doesn’t like it” said Achterberg.
“We tried Neto but we went too late. I told them early that Neto was at Fiorentina, playing in Europe and he would be free. I think we went in January out there, but then he had already signed for Juventus.” added the former goalkeeping coach.
It looks like Liverpool were close to signing would-be renowned goalkeepers, however due to various reasons were unable to secure the transfers.
Based on Achterberg’s comments, Liverpool were unable to sign these players due to either lack of financial reasons or they were slightly behind in making an official offer and losing out to rival clubs.
