After coming off a 2-1 victory against Arsenal, Liverpool went into their next pre-season fixture against Manchester United with momentum.
The match concluded their tour in the USA at the Brice Stadium in South Carolina.
With a record crowd of 77,559 for a non-US football meet at the Williams-Brice Stadium, the match kicked off with high expectations.
The starting lineup included familiar faces like Ibrahim Konate, Mohammed Salah and Diogo Jota.
We also saw youngsters like Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley make the first eleven, after impressing so far in the team’s tour.
Amidst not-so-comfortable weather conditions, the match kicked off and the Reds drew first blood after just 10 minutes.
An error in the area while defending from United midfielder, Casemiro, allowed Fabio Carvalho to score the first goal.
The next goal came on 36 minutes just after the half-hour mark.
Mohammed Salah demonstrated good control on the touchline and got the best of Manchester United youngster Toby Collyer.
With a dash of pace, he set up Curtis Jones and the Englishman put it past Andre Onana.
The third goal came as a rebound.
Manchester United shot-stopper, Andre Onana couldn’t hold Diogo Jota’s first-time shot and this allowed Konstantinos Tsimika to take hold of the loose ball and put it past the Cameroonian keeper.
The outing didn’t seem particularly rewarding for the Manchester side, as their loss to the Reds was the second to a premier league side in preseason.
Both coaches had something to say after the match, but it was Arne Slot who seemed impressed with his team’s ability to take their chances.
What did Arne Slot say?
After the match while speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, the Liverpool boss was asked if he was pleased with the team’s performance.
“Yes, I was – but not with all of them,” said Slot.
“We are very happy with the result, we scored some really nice goals.
“But I don’t think we had enough control over the game because United were threatening us more than a few times. It’s a 3-0 win but the score could have been different tonight as well.”
When asked about his take on the team’s performance on the tour, the new Liverpool head coach was positive overall.
“Very positive, I think.
“Of course the results, that’s where everybody is looking at. But players stayed fit and they are able to perform in the way we want, so [a] high-intensity game.
“We saw some great goals during this tour, some great build-up situations and I see them working really, really hard not to concede.
“Like I said, today I think we gave away too many chances, United deserved more than a 3-0 loss. But it’s also our quality that we do score our own chances.”
With stellar performances from players on the team so far in pre-season, Liverpool are looking good for the 2024/2025 season.
The Reds play their opening English Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town on the 17th of August at Portman Road.
