Manager Arne Slot has revealed the latest on Trent Alexander-Arnold and whether he has had a chat with the 25-year-old about his contract situation.

As many of you are probably aware, Liverpool’s vice-captain sees his deal at Anfield run until June 2025, meaning that he is now inside the last 12 months of his contract.

He is not alone in this, as both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are also in the last year of their respective contracts.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a notable 2023/24 season with Liverpool, playing a versatile role that often saw him moving into a more central midfield position.

He made 37 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing several assists.

His ability to influence games from deeper positions was evident, as he continued to be a key player for Liverpool, particularly in transitioning play and creating chances.

At Euro 2024, he played the opening two games of the tournament as a midfielder before being relegated to bench duty.

He scored the decisive penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Switzerland, helping England reach the semi-finals.

Despite the short-lived experiment and being relegated to the bench for much of the tournament, Alexander-Arnold was still seen as a big part of the squad.

What did Arne Slot say about Trent Alexander-Arnold contract situation?

Speaking in North Carolina at the conclusion of the USA tour, the Dutch manager was quizzed on the contractual situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Slot revealed that he didn’t speak to the right-back about his ‘commitment’ but rather on the upcoming season.

It’s important to note that Slot spoke to Alexander-Arnold during Euro 2024, perhaps suggesting why he skirted around the contract question:

“We didn’t speak about his commitment,” Slot said via the Daily Mail.

“We only spoke about the way I wanted him to play and how he could fit in that style. He was focused on the Euros at that moment we spoke and I saw some clips from people showing me that he looks really fit and sharp.”

“I can’t wait to see him train. But some others did quite well (on tour) as well so it is interesting to see if the others come back and the level goes up even more.”

“Like I said, we conceded too many chances (against United).”

The pictures and stories that emerged from Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s holiday did little to quell the Real Madrid rumours.

Real Madrid has shown strong interest in acquiring the right-back, especially given their recent trend of targeting players with expiring contracts.

Amid all the speculation one thing remains clear, and that’s Liverpool should never have let it get to the point where Real Madrid could approach on a free signing basis.
