The Athletic provide transfer update on Joe Gomez

The Athletic has provided an update on Joe Gomez amid interest from Newcastle United and other clubs.

The Athletic has provided an update on Joe Gomez amid all the transfer speculation recently, specifically with Newcastle United and the Anthony Gordon situation.

The England international has come off the back of one of his best seasons in a Liverpool shirt.

Gomez racked up 51 appearances in 2023/24. This marks the highest total of his nine years with the club by a wide margin, and just 13 shy of the combined total from the previous three seasons.

His consistency earned him a first England call-up in four years during the March international break last season and was also included in the England squad for the recent European Championships as well.

Gomez, who has been a versatile and loyal player for Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015, has faced a challenging period marked by injuries and competition for starting spots.

Despite this, his ability to cover various positions in defense has made him a valuable squad member.

The potential departure of Gomez, who has made over 220 appearances for the club, would leave Liverpool needing to find a reliable replacement.

But according to the Athletic, an outgoing transfer for the defender would not materialize easily.

What did the Athletic report on Joe Gomez?

There has been plenty of speculation on the faithful Liverpool servant in recent weeks.

It emerged that Joe Gomez was included in a potential swap deal involving Anthony Gordon, where Newcastle signaled with a proposal to buy Gomez for £45m and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m.

However, The Gordon-Gomez trade was canceled, though, at the last minute, as the PSR deadline of June 30 drew near.

Newcastle came up with another alternative, with the sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton digging them out of the PSR hole.

It was reported by the Daily Mail that Gomez would have been happy to play for Newcastle United due to the chance of seeing more game-time.

This has led to all sorts of speculation, with the Athletic now setting the record straight.

As part of their TransferDeal sheet, the news outlet wrote on Gomez:

“Interest is growing in a number of Liverpool’s players and decisions will be made on their futures in the coming weeks.”

“It remains to be seen if clubs return with offers that meet Liverpool’s asking prices. Others including Tyler Morton and Ben Doak are attracting interest.”

“Liverpool are not actively looking to sell Gomez. He remains part of Slot’s plans, but the versatile defender has other suitors beyond Newcastle.”

Once again, this lines up with what the reliable Paul Joyce reported on the matter, as well as the player’s own Instagram hints recently.

Nevertheless, Gomez is certainly one to watch for the summer, but it would be sad to lose a player who has served as faithfully as Gomez has.
