Marca have released their own slant on Liverpool and how the club could move in the last few weeks of the transfer window.
The Reds and their transfer window is finally set to get underway after Richard Hughes pointed towards a ‘crescendo’ in August.
Now that August is upon us, we have already received plenty of transfer updates.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has confirmed that the Reds hierarchy are already working towards a No.6 signing, while multiple reports from Spain suggest that Liverpool are in for Valencia ‘keeper Giorgi Mamardashvil.
Since Fabinho’s departure in 2023, Liverpool has struggled to find a suitable replacement for the critical defensive midfielder role.
The club’s midfield dynamics have shifted, with Alexis Mac Allister initially stepping into the No.6 position at the start of the 2023/24 season.
While Mac Allister performed admirably, his natural attacking instincts and flair are better utilized in a more advanced position. This adjustment highlighted the need for a specialized defensive midfielder.
Wataru Endo, brought in to fill the gap, has delivered solid performances and has been a positive impact on the team.
However, there are concerns about whether he can be the long-term solution that Liverpool needs to compete at the highest level.
At 31, Endo may not represent the future of Liverpool’s midfield, raising doubts about his ability to be a cornerstone in the club’s quest for Premier League titles/
The market for quality defensive midfielders is currently challenging, with Liverpool exploring one unnamed midfield option in particular.
Now reports from Spain may be able to shed some light on the situation.
What did Marca say about Liverpool?
David Ornstein revealed that Liverpool “have identified a specialist 6 from outside the Premier League”.
Now Marca has namedropped Ederson in their latest release on Liverpool.
They claim that Liverpool are now accelerating in the transfer market with three positions identified: central defense, wide forward, and a defensive midfield role.
For the central midfield role, Atalanta man Ederson has been named as possible signing for the Anfield club this summer.
It is not the first time the Brazilian has been linked to the club and it feels like it will not be the last.
The 24-year-old had an outstanding campaign with the Serie A side, crowning it off with a Europa League title against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen – the first European trophy in Atalanta’s history.
Ederson finished his season seven goals and one assist in 53 games across all competitions – and was a nailed-on starter for manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
Against Liverpool in the Europa League quarterfinals, he certainly bossed proceedings and proved he is capable of playing on the top level.
Speaking about a possible transfer back in June, the Brazil international said:
“If something comes up about a transfer, the club has to accept it first, and that is the most important thing”, Ederson began.
“I have a good relationship with Atalanta, so the moment they come and tell me that they have some kind of offer, that will be when the talks start.”
“I don’t know [which league suits me best], I’ve thought about it a lot, I like Italy, I’m well adapted, but I’m curious about the Premier League, so I don’t know.”
The player himself is certainly aware of some of the transfer interest he has attracted, but it remains to be seen if Liverpool’s interest manifests into a formal offer.
