The August period will be a critical one for Liverpool and their transfer plans as they gear up for the start of the Premier League season.
The beginning of the 2024/25 campaign is just around the corner, with Liverpool facing Ipswich Town away on 17 August.
It is hoped that there is more clarity on the Liverpool squad by then, particularly with incomings.
David Ornstein has already reported that the Anfield hierarchy have identified the No.6 position as an area to reinforce and have identified a top target that’s currently playing outside of the Premier League.
However, it is likewise reported that any potential incomings could hinge on how much funds the Reds can raise with outgoings as well.
Plenty of players’ futures are not clear heading into the start of the season, with Fabio Carvalho, Tyler Morton, and Owen Beck still needing their futures sorted out.
Ben Doak falls into this category, although one report claims that the club has already decided that the Scotsman will leave on loan this summer.
But one player who could raise some significant funds is Sepp van den Berg – who looks like he could depart despite impressing in pre-season.
The 22-year-old had a hugely impressive loan spell at Mainz last term and is believed to be keen for a move away from Anfield after feeling undervalued in the past.
And one club is still holding thumbs despite the big transfer fee attached to the Dutchman’s head.
PSV ‘still betting’ on signing Sepp van den Berg
Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven are in a ‘desperate search’ for defenders amid injury problems and certain players leaving at the end of last season.
Therefore, the reigning Eredivisie champions are ‘still betting’ on brokering a deal with Liverpool over van den Berg, but it’s acknowledged that a bit of ‘goodwill’ is needed from all parties to end the long-running saga.
This is according to the reliable Eindhovens Dagblad (via Sport Witness), who have asserted that PSV are not giving up on the Dutchman just yet.
The club is “still betting” that it can close a deal for Van den Berg, but the Dutch are not getting the results they are hoping for.
Weeks of negotiations about their interest have been delayed because they are unwilling to pay what Liverpool are asking for Van den Berg – a reported £20 million fee.
Though there is currently no 100% guarantee, it is believed that the transfers will occur if there is “a bit of goodwill from all sides.”
Although Liverpool has a voice in the situation and are aware that several clubs are expressing interest, Van den Berg would prefer to join PSV according to the report.
Mainz are well known to hold an interest after seeing his quality firsthand in the past season, with Mainz chief Christian Heidel recently claiming the 22-year-old wanted to likewise join his club:
“We would like him to stay, and Sepp would also really like to do it. But we also respect that Liverpool have not decided about it yet.”
“We will not buy a player for over £20 million, which is what Liverpool want. Our club cannot do that.”
It then seems we have not heard the last about van den Berg this summer, with both PSV and Mainz seemingly a bit desperate to secure their man.
