The Times have reported some slightly concerning Wataru Endo news, depending on which way you look at it.
On Wednesday, news broke that Liverpool were examining the prospect of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
Zubimendi has been impressive over the 2023/24 season, contributing significantly to Real Sociedad’s strong performance in La Liga and their qualification for the Champions League.
His abilities were further showcased at Euro 2024, where he played a crucial role in Spain’s triumph, particularly stepping in for Rodri during the final against England.
The Spanish international, who is well-known for his remarkable ball retention and passing abilities, seems to fit Arne Slot’s ideal of a possession-based strategy.
To secure Zubimendi, Liverpool will need to activate his release clause fully, as Real Sociedad is not inclined to negotiate a lower fee.
Additionally, convincing Zubimendi to leave his current club is a challenge that several other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona, have faced unsuccessfully in the past.
But it seems that the signing could also spell the end of Wataru Endo on Merseyside.
What did the Times report on Wataru Endo?
Many Reds fans were surprised at the Japan international signing last summer, and he was consigned to being labelled as a stopgap signing.
Endo made a total of 43 appearances across all competitions following his £16 million transfer from Stuttgart.
He played primarily as a defensive midfielder but also adapted to various roles when required.
His season stats include three goals and one assist, underscoring his occasional contributions to the attack.
In the Premier League, Endo featured in 29 matches, amassing 1,720 minutes. He also played nine times in the Europa League and made appearances in domestic cup competitions

But it now that a Zubimendi incoming could cause Endo to depart Anfield.
“Slot wants Liverpool to play a more possession-based game and strengthening at No6 with a technical player has been a priority.”
“It seems he wants to move away from Wataru Endo, who was signed last summer from Stuttgart after Liverpool failed with bids for Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia. Both players signed for Chelsea.”
Endo has already been subject to a bid from Marseille while one Premier League club believes he could be sold this summer.
The Japan international won over hearts with his spirted performances and hard-working nature.
It would then be a shame if he is shown the exit door after just one campaign, especially after performing so admirably despite being thrown in the deep end at Anfield.
