Liverpool’s quest for a new midfielder is hotting up.
It is no longer news that the Reds are interested in strengthening their midfield this summer, with a specialist defensive midfielder one of the club’s priorities this summer transfer market.
The Premier League giants have been quiet in the transfer window, as new manager Arne Slot explores his options at the club.
However, having returned from a three-week pre-season tour of the United States, the Dutchman has seen enough of his squad and is ready to make his move in the transfer market.
Top on his list of likely additions is a defensive midfielder, and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is the man Liverpool are reportedly looking at signing in this transfer window.
But it seems that the Reds are keeping their options open in case Zubimendi doesn’t come to the club.
And one of those options has taken them to Italy.
Morten Frendrup scouted by Liverpool
It seems that a new midfield target has emerged, with Liverpool being linked with Genoa’s Morten Frendrup.
According to a report by GiveMeSport, the Reds’s scouts have been watching the Danish midfielder for a number of months, and are increasingly interested in making a bid for him.
Frendrup joined Genoa from Brondby in the summer of 2022 and went on to make 37 league appearances in his first season for the Italian side.
Last season was even better for the Dane, as he played 37 league games for Genoa, who finished in eleventh position after gaining promotion back to the top flight.
Although Frendrup’s shirt number is 32, he operates in that number 6 position for his side – a potential that Liverpool are looking for reinforcements in.
The 23-year-old is a tough tackler and a box-to-box midfielder, famed for his hard work and his ability to read the game.
His defensive contributions is considered complimentary of the current Liverpool midfield options, and the club could make a bid before the window shuts.
A move for Frendrup cannot be ruled out if it’s true that LFC scouts have been watching his performances closely for a months.
But the Reds will have to convince Genoa to part with their priced asset.
The Serie A side reportedly value Frendrup in the region of £21million and they are under no pressure to lower their demands, especially as Liverpool are not the only club interested.
English Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur have also been keeping tabs on Frendrup.
But it is Liverpool who hold a more serious interest in the player who could provide competition for Wataru Endo if he moves to Anfield.
