What reports from Spain are now saying about Martin Zubimendi and Liverpool

Local San Sebastian outlet Noticias de Gipuzkoa has provided their slant on the matter with Martin Zubimendi having a decision to make.

The latest reports from Spain have helped to shed light on the recent developments surround Martin Zubimendi.

Earlier this week, news emerged that Liverpool had identified the Real Sociedad midfielder as their top target.

While the situation looked optimistic initially, further reports have now cast doubt as to whether the Euro 2024 winner will move on from Sociedad this summer.

Real Sociedad is heading to Germany to play their final pre-season friendly before the La Liga season begins on August 18. They will face FC Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin, scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m.

This match is significant as it marks the final preparation for their opening league game against Rayo Vallecano at Anoeta.

Among the traveling squad are three of Real Sociedad’s European champions: Álex Remiro, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Martin Zubimendi.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Zubimendi is driven by his exceptional ability to control the game from a defensive midfield position.

In the 2023/24 season, Zubimendi showcased his defensive prowess with a higher success rate in tackling dribblers (54.8%) compared to Liverpool’s current options [FBref].

His 37 interceptions and a 61.1% win rate in aerial duels further highlight his defensive capabilities.

What is the latest on Martin Zubimendi from Spain?

Adur Saraosa for local San Sebastian outlet Noticias de Gipuzkoa has reported the latest on what has now grown into a transfer saga.

Liverpool is reportedly willing to pay his release clause, which is set at 60 million euros. This situation puts the decision in Zubimendi’s hands, as Real Sociedad has little power to retain him if Liverpool meets the clause.

Zubimendi has been contemplating the move. Initially, it seemed almost certain that he would leave for Liverpool, but recent developments suggest he is having second thoughts.

This uncertainty creates a tense situation for both clubs as they await his final decision.

Interestingly, Mikel Merino, another crucial player for Real Sociedad, is notably absent from the squad traveling to Germany.

Merino has attracted interest from Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta keen on bringing him to North London.

Therefore, it seems that Real Sociedad do not think Zubimendi’s situation warrants an exclusion as Merino’s transfer links do.

Former Liverpool man and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is a big fan of Zubimendi, saying back in 2022:

“Martin’s a player that all coaches would want.”

“He’s generous, and he always thinks more about his team-mates than himself.”

“He has that ability to generate play, to make those around him better, always offering solutions; to improve the move.”

“He understands what the next step is before the ball gets to him. He has that ability to organise, the axis. I loved working with him.”
