Liverpool defender Billy Koumetio is reportedly close to joining Dundee United this summer.
The French defender was signed from Orleans FC in 2018 and signed his first professional contract with the Anfield club two years later.
He was one of the several youngsters who made his senior debut for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, coming on as a substitute against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League in December 2020.
Koumetio also started a Carabao Cup tie with Leicester City in the following campaign, and was seen as one of the players that would have a senior career at Anfield.
Klopp even praised the youngster back then, hinting that he could have a future.
“Billy the kid. He doesn’t look like a kid! In my opinion, his face looks like a kid but then all the rest is like, wow! Yes, he’s a big talent. I’m pretty sure he will make big steps,” Klopp said at the time.
However, things have not really worked out for the Frenchman at Anfield, and he has had three loan spells outside the club.
Koumitio spent the first half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan with Ligue 2 side USL Dunkerque before being recalled from his season-long deal in January 2024.
He subsequently headed out on loan again, linking up with Championship side Blackburn Rovers for the rest of last season.
Latest on Billy Koumetio
However, despite his promising start at Liverpool, fresh reports claim Koumetio will leave Liverpool permanently this summer, with Scottish side Dundee United his new destination.
Le Parisien journaist Marc Mechenoua claims the 21-year-old Liverpool centre back will sign a two-year contract with the option of an extra year at the SPFL club.
Although Koumetio leaves Anfield with his dreams unrealized, his age means he has time to rebuild his career elsewhere.
At Anfield, the 21-year-old would have struggled for game time, with the likes of fellow youngsters Jarell Quansah and Sepp van den Berg ahead of him the first team pecking order.
