Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has emerged as a potential summer transfer target for another English Premier League club.
The England defender enjoyed one of his most productive spells in a Liverpool shirt last season as he made 51 appearances in all competitions.
However, he made most of those appearances playing outside of his original position in center back and was used in a variety of positions in Jurgen Klopp’s team.
He remains a centre back option for the team alongside the likes of Vigil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarrel Quansah and the returning Sepp van den Berg.
But despite ability to play across many positions across the back four, Liverpool are open to selling him for the right price this summer.
And it’s believed that the defender is said to be open to move away from Anfield for a new challenge.
Newcastle United were exploring the possibility of using the defender in a swap deal involving Anthony Gordon, while Bayern Munich were also considering signing him at some point in the summer transfer window.
However, none of those moves materialized and the 27-year-old stayed put at Anfield.
He was part of the last members of the first team squad that linked up with Arne Slot’s squad after an extended holiday, following his involvement with the England national team in the European Championship.
New club interested in Joe Gomez
But although he is now part of Slot’s plans for the new season, he is now being linked with a new club.
UEFA Champions League qualifiers Aston Villa are the latest club credited with interest in Gomez.
The Daily Telegraph claim that Unai Emery’s side see the Liverpool defender as a possible replacement if Diego Carlos leaves.
The Villa defender is wanted by Fulham and West Ham United, so the Birmingham-based club will almost certainly enter the market for a defender should Carlos moev on.
Gomez is not the only defender they are considering though.
Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida and Chelsea man Trevoh Chalobah are also said to be targets.
