Are we seeing a new twist in the Martin Zubimendi transfer to Liverpool?
Both Liverpool and Real Sociedad fans are waiting to hear whether the transfer will happen or not.
Liverpool fans want it to go ahead.
Real Sociedad fans, understandably, want the player to stay in San Sebastian.
When Rodri was replaced by Spain at half-time in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, many saw that as a huge advantage for England.
But Martin Zubimendi made sure it wasn’t.
The midfielder came on and controlled the game for the Spanish as they went on to lift the trophy.
So it makes sense that Sociedad fans want to keep a player of his quality.
It seems that talks are still ongoing between the sides as they look to make a deal.
New reports from Spain seems to indicate a fresh approach being taken to ensure the deal goes ahead.
Relevo journalist Jorge Picon has tweeted to say that the two clubs are still working on reaching an agreement for the player.
One new possibility being discussed is for the Reds to send some players in the opposite direction. This option has been put on the table.
It’s unclear from the tweet whether this option was broached by the English or Spanish sides.
Nor is it clear whether it’d be for loan players or a permanent move from someone in England to the Basque country.
But the journalist confirms that the player has already agreed to a move to Liverpool.
This fresh piece of information seems to indicate that Liverpool are looking to create a different payment structure to just outright paying for the release clause.
If the release clause was met, then there wouldn’t be a need to discuss terms with the club.
However, it seems that the Liverpool hierarchy are looking for a payment structure that doesn’t necessitate paying everything in one lump sum. And sending players to Spain is maybe an option they’d consider.
