A reported Liverpool target in Mathys Angely is set to join Wolfsburg imminently if the latest reports from France are to be believed.
Angeley, 17, has been one of the standout prospects at Bordeaux and has caught interest from plenty of clubs in the past weeks.
The centre-back has emerged as a top prospect for several elite European teams, including Liverpool, following Bordeaux’s bankruptcy declaration.
Bordeaux, formerly a dominant force in French football, declared bankruptcy recently following unsuccessful acquisition negotiations with Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Bordeaux was obliged to release every player, even talented players like Angely, and was administratively demoted to the third division of French football as a result of their financial collapse.
The six-time Ligue 1 champions participated in the Champions League knockout stage in the 2009–10 campaign, but now find themselves as a semi-professional club less than 15 years later.
Mathys Angely to join Wolfsburg
Le Parisen report that Angely is set to join Wolfsburg imminently, with the player already travelling to Germany for his medicals.
The Reds were reportedly keen to bring the young center-back to Anfield as part of their efforts to bolster their defensive options with young talent.
The Bordeaux free transfer is almost finalized, and Wolfsburg is anticipated to make an announcement about their new addition within the next few hours.
One of the club’s best prospects for the future had been the teenage defender, but financial difficulties had forced the team to drop from Ligue 2 to the fourth division of French football, releasing all of the players from their contracts.
Albert Riera, the manager of Bordeaux (and former Liverpool man), has left the team due to this scenario and joined RK Celje in Slovenia.
With Angely available on a free transfer, it was seen as a very low risk investment for the Reds.
However, it seems Liverpool did not rate Angely that highly with Wolfsburg getting a free run at the French defender.
With the clock ticking until the August 30 transfer deadline, the wait for a new Liverpool singing drags on.
