The English Premier League could be dramatically altered if a report from The Times comes true.

Two of the biggest clubs in the country are at serious risk of relegation from the top flight.

In a bombshell article, journalist Martin Samuels has provided some insight that will send shockwaves throughout the football world.

But let’s add some context first.

A number of English Premier League clubs are currently being investigated for breaking financial fair play (FFP) rules.

Manchester City are the most high profile, with their case set to be heard some time next month.

But they’re not the only ones.

Chelsea, Everton are Leicester City also has fallen foul of the rules.

And now Samuels has painted a pretty apocalyptic scene for these sides.

According to the Samuels’ article in The Times, three clubs from Manchester City, Chelsea, Everton and Leicester City could be relegated.

That means that only one would survive and stay in the league.

All of these clubs have the threat of points deductions and enormous sanctions hanging over them ahead of the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Martin Samuels reports relegation threat

“Right now, before a ball has been kicked, Ipswich Town and Southampton, of the promoted clubs, could already be safe,” Samuels wrote.

“All have that threat over them: the possibility of points deductions or worse, of enormous sanctions, perhaps even banishment.”

Everton have already suffered some sanctions, as they were deducted a total of eight points last season for breaching the Premier League financial rules.

This season, Manchester City could be the most hit by Premier League’s sanctions as Pep Guardiola’s side are facing 115 charges for breaking financial fair play (FFP) rules.

Samuels believes these clubs could face enormous sanctions and even banishments.

If City and Chelsea were relegated, it would change the face of the English game.

Both clubs are recent English Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners, so them facing each other in the Championship instead of the top flight would be mind boggling.

Whether this turns out to be the case, football fans will be keeping a close eye on.
