Arne Slot has responded to the Martin Zubimendi saga that unfolded over the past few weeks.
Liverpool’s attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad ultimately failed due to several key factors, despite their willingness to meet the midfielder’s £51 million release clause.
Initially, Liverpool were confident of securing the Spanish international, who had been a crucial target for new head coach Arne Slot as he sought a defensive midfielder to complete his squad.
Zubimendi, however, had deep ties to Real Sociedad, the club he had been with for 14 years, and these emotional bonds played a significant role in his decision to reject Liverpool’s advances.
While Liverpool’s offer was financially attractive and would have seen Zubimendi earn significantly more than his current contract with Sociedad, the midfielder ultimately prioritized loyalty to his boyhood club.
Reports suggested that pressure from within Real Sociedad, as well as Zubimendi’s own deep connection to the club’s values and culture, led him to reconsider the move.
Zubimendi had previously turned down offers from other major European clubs, including Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, indicating his strong desire to remain in San Sebastián.
Now Arne Slot has provided his view on the matter.
What did Arne Slot say about Martin Zubimendi?
Speaking in his pre-Ipswich Town press conference, Slot was quizzed on what happened with the Spain international from his perspective:
“I’ve said many times already that our squad is really strong, and it’s not so easy to find players that can help us or even strengthen the squad – but Zubimendi was one of them to be fair.”
“But he decided not to come. So we go forward with the ones we have, and those guys did really well in pre-season. We’re in a good place. Like I said many times before, in the background, Richard [Hughes] is trying to strengthen the squad as he can.”
“But unfortunately, Zubimendi decided not to come, he [Richard Hughes] tried every effort, he did everything to bring him in but unfortunately if a player does not want to come it’s obvious he is not coming.”
Liverpool believed they had a verbal agreement with Zubimendi to join, and his late backtrack caught them by surprise.
