Everton are reportedly eyeing up a move for former Liverpool man Joel Matip, who said goodbye to a sparkling Anfield career at the end of last season.

The Cameroonian was faithful servant to the club and racked up over 200 appearances in an eight-year stint on Merseyside.

Matip’s journey with Liverpool began in 2016 when he joined the club on a free transfer from Schalke 04.

Over his eight-year tenure at Anfield, Matip established himself as a reliable and composed defender.

Known for his calmness on the ball and ability to make forward runs from the back, Matip was a key figure in Liverpool’s successes under Jürgen Klopp.

During his time at Liverpool, Matip helped the team secure numerous titles, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

Notably, he played a crucial role in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph, even providing an assist in the final against Tottenham Hotspur

Matip’s time at Liverpool was also marked by injury struggles, particularly in the latter years. Despite these setbacks, he remained a valued squad member and a fan favorite, admired for his professionalism and dedication.

But it seems that the 32-year-old could be making a return to Merseyside, but just representing the other side.

It’s believed a combination of injury concerns and his high wage demands have dissuaded interested parties.

But now with the new season around the corner in Europe, it seems interest in Matip is ramping up.

CaughtOffside have reported that all of Everton, Fulham, and Bayer Leverkusen have made their interest clear to Matip’s entourage.

All clubs are thought to have already made preliminaries contact with the Cameroonian and are well aware of the defender’s situation and wage demands.

In the event that Michael Keane and Mason Holgate decide to leave the Toffees in the upcoming weeks, Everton will attempt to get Joel Matip.

Additionally, Jarrad Branthwaite’s future at Goodison Park is unclear, and Sean Dyche will not want to be short-staffed at central defense.

Meanwhile, Tim Ream may depart Craven Cottage, and Fulham is bracing for a potential hole in its defense.

Matip is thought to be the ideal option should the 36-year-old decide to break ways with the London club because of his experience and leadership abilities.
