Liverpool fans are wondering whether a new midfielder will come into the club this summer.

Arne Slot’s side have are in the market for a defensive midfielder after identifying the number six role as a priority this summer.

They were close to finally getting the right player to fill that void in midfield.

However, their primary target for that position, Martin Zubimendi, said no to the club’s advances, leaving Liverpool still in search of a defensive midfield this summer.

Although the reports from sources close to Liverpool reveal that the Reds will no longer make any move for a number six, after missing out on Zubimendi, but could the Reds have a rethink after one of their previous targets for that position expressed his desire to leave his current club?

According to German football journalist Florian Plettenberg, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone has told the Bundesliga club he wants to leave this summer.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Manu Kone during the last summer transfer window  and it was even reported that they’d agreed personal terms with him.

As is the case this summer, the Reds were interested in signing a defensive midfielder last summer, and identified Kone as one of the candidates for the role.

But the transfer never materialized, probably because the player suffered a bad injury.

However, these fresh reports from Germany claim that he has asked to leave Monchengladbach and the German club are open to selling the player.

Plettenberg reports taht Monchengladbach are still waiting for suitable offers for the Frenchman whose contract at Borussia Park runs till 2026.

The Bundesliga side want to receive at least €20 million as a fixed amount with a further €5 million in bonuses. That would take the deal close to €25m.

Manu Kone made 25 appearances for Monchengladbach last season, scoring two goals and recording two assists.

With Liverpool still in the market for a defensive midfielder, it remains to be seen if they might try again for the 23-year-old.
