Liverpool take on Newcastle at Anfield tonight in the only Premier League game which is on New Years Day.
The pair have had some fierce encounters in recent years with the reverse fixture evidence of that.
Virgil Van Dijk was sent off but even with ten men, Darwin Nunez scored two goals in the last ten minutes to wipe out Anthony Gordon’s opener.
Last season was similar with a late winner from Fabio Carvalho at Anfield and he may be involved again due to the fact he has been recalled from his loan.
The game at St James Park in the last campaign was more straightforward for Liverpool as they won 2-0 whilst Nick Pope got sent off for a ludicrous handball.
Jurgen Klopp would enjoy another straightforward win like that tonight but Eddie Howe’s side will be wanting to prove everyone wrong after just two wins in their last seven games.
It looks like he will have to contend with even more injury issues though for the game.
Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson may not be involved
According to a report Howe’s first choice right-back Kieran Trippier and key striker Callum Wilson are doubts to face Liverpool.
Newcastle have had to contend with a mountain of injuries in the past month and this takes things from bad to worse for Howe.
Trippier was in a poor fun of form but is always one of Newcastle’s most important players.
For Wilson it appears to be another injury issue which have annoyed him throughout his whole career.
Tino Livramento may replace Trippier at full-back whereas Alexander Isak is expected to lead the line.
The pairing have not been completely ruled out of the game but Howe and his coaching staff are sweating on their fitness.
So even if they can play they may not be fit enough to start or last the full 90 minutes.
