Real Sociedad have launched a ‘charm offensive’ to keep Martin Zubimendi at club.

Zubimendi, who has made 187 appearances for Real Sociedad since his debut in 2019, is known for his exceptional ability to control the tempo of the game and his defensive acumen.

His performances were crucial in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, particularly when he stepped in for the injured Rodri during the final against England.

His composure and ability to organize play make him an ideal candidate for Liverpool’s midfield.

The Spaniard has been at Sociedad since the age of 12 and has rejected advances from Barcelona and Arsenal in the past.

Therefore, it will not be a simple matter to coax him out his native Spain.

Up until now, the news remained cautiously optimistic  that the club will secure Zubimendi’s signature before the transfer window closes.

The acquisition of the Spaniard would mark a significant reinforcement for Liverpool’s midfield and will make him the first major signing under Arne Slot’s tenure at Anfield.

But now it seems that the potential move has been cast into doubt once again.

What did Paul Joyce report on Martin Zubimendi?

Real Sociedad are making moves to keep Martin Zubimendi at the club according to the reliable Paul Joyce.

“The power play from the club’s hierarchy complicates things for Liverpool” the reporter wrote.

The Basque club’s demand that Liverpool pay the entire £51 million cost in one installment may be the only thing separating them from the deal.

Even if the player grants his approval, Liverpool and Real Sociedad still need to reach a deal as things stand.

It is expected that Real Sociedad will want the Anfield club to pay the entire release clause in one lump sum, which is now casting some doubt on the transfer.

Furthermore, the San Sebastian club has already lost key defender Robin Le Normand to Athletico Madrid for £30 million while Mikel Merino is being heavily courted by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

To lose all three players in one window would be difficult for Real Sociedad to deal with, as the trio are undoubtedly key players for the La Liga side.

Former Liverpool and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has also spoken highly of the 25-year-old, emphasizing his intelligence and selflessness on the pitch.
