It seems Sepp van den Berg could spend the new season at Anfield after one of his suitors walked away from the negotiations.

The Dutchman, who has been at Liverpool since the summer of 2019, is one of the few players many expect to leave permanently this summer despite his obvious qualities.

He enjoyed a productive loan spell at Mainz 05 last season and was one of the first players to report back for training under Arne Slot.

We exclusively revealed that Sepp van den Berg has been a stand out performer in pre-season.

However, given the competition for places in the Liverpool defence, the club are open to selling him and have slapped a £20 million price tag on him.

Mainz, where he spent last season on loan was interested, while Slot’s former side Feyeenord were also keen.

But it was Dutch Eredivisie champions PSV, who were more desperate for the 22-year-old.

Earlier in the window, PSV offered £10 million for van den Berg, but Liverpool rejected their offer, as it was below their valuation.

The Dutch side were expected to come back to the table with an improved offer as they were reportedly desperate for the player.

However, fresh reports from the Netherlands claim that the Dutch giants have decided to drop their interest in Van den Berg.

Telegraaf confirm PSV have left talks

According to Dutch news channel the Telegraaf, “PSV has decided to shift gears and shift their interest to other candidates to strengthen the defense.”

PSV were discouraged from pushing for the deal due to Liverpool’s £20m asking price, according to the report.

The news outlet claims that the sum is above PSV’s cap as the club would have to set a new transfer record to sign the defender.

PSV’s record signing to date is Hirving Lozano. They signed him for €14.5m in 2023.

The report also claims that “Liverpool do want to make a decision yet and wait longer with a decision on Van den Berg’s future, because it is not yet completely clear what will happen to some players in the Reds’ defense.”

Several clubs are reportedly interested in Van den Berg.

German sides Mainz 05, VfB Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Wolfsburg are also mentioned as clubs keen on signing the 22-year-old.
