Fabrizio Romano has again spoken on the topic of Anthony Gordon after reports re-ignited this week.
By now, most Liverpool fans are aware that Newcastle United’s precarious PSR situation at the end of June caused them to consider selling the 23-year-old.
It has since emerged that Joe Gomez was likewise discussed in addition to Jarell Quansah for a potential swap deal
The Newcastle United winger, who impressed in 2023/24, is highly regarded within Liverpool’s scouting and coaching circles.
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon aligns with their broader strategy of strengthening squad with younger players with their best years ahead of them.
The potential departure of players like Luis Diaz could open up a spot for a new winger, making Gordon an attractive prospect.
The Reds are known for their meticulous approach in the transfer market, often engaging in thorough evaluations before proceeding with bids.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, the Merseyside club holds Gordon in high esteem, viewing him as a “top, top player.”
What did Fabrizio Romano say about Anthony Gordon?
Romano emphasized that while Liverpool has not yet made a formal bid to Newcastle, Gordon’s name has been frequently discussed in internal meetings at Anfield.
The appreciation for Gordon’s abilities and potential is evident, but as of now, there has been no official move from Liverpool.
The club’s decision-making process appears to be in a state of evaluation, carefully considering their options in the transfer market:
“The appreciation of Liverpool for Anthony Gordon remains strong, Romano said to the Daily Briefing.
“As of today, there is still no bid from Liverpool to Newcastle, so we can’t talk about the negotiation and we can’t confirm the situation now.”
“What I can confirm, once again, is the appreciation of the player internally at Liverpool.”
“In several meetings that the club have had, the name of Anthony Gordon has been discussed, and he’s really highly rated. Liverpool believe he’s a top, top player.”
“Let’s see if Liverpool will reactivate this option in terms of talks with Newcastle, and let’s see what Newcastle want to do, because he’s a crucial player for them.”
“Now that the issue of Financial Fair Play is no longer there, there’s no pressure on the Magpies to sell.”
We are now in August, meaning that is just under a month left of the summer transfer window.
Richard Hughes previously suggested that there would be a ‘crescendo’ of transfer business in August.
Therefore, if Liverpool are indeed as keen on Gordon as reports claim, then a formal offer should be forthcoming soon.
