Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool have ‘little weaknesses’ in their game that could come back to haunt them if they do not buy in January.

The winter window is now open although the expectation is that the Reds will not do any business.

However, Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have done January business in the last two seasons.

Luis Diaz arrived halfway through the 21/22 season to help spur Liverpool to a domestic double.

Cody Gakpo was then brought at the beginning of 2023.

He was one of the only positives in a largely disappointing 2022/23 Liverpool season.

What did Jamie Carragher say?

Nonetheless, the ex-Liverpool centre-back believes the Anfield club needs to bring in defensive reinforcements if they are to stay title challengers:

“I do still feel that Man City are the favourites for the title right now and they have the edge,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“There are still little weaknesses in Liverpool where they could be found out.”

“On the back of injuries to the two left-backs and Matip being out of the season, this is an opportunity that Liverpool can’t waste and l do think Liverpool have to bring a defender in during January.”

We are inclined to agree with Jamie Carragher here, as the Reds are one defensive injury away from serious trouble at the back.

The last thing Jurgen Klopp needs is having to fill players in at the back like he did during the 2020/21 season.

While Joe Gomez has rose to prominence this season, he will also be needed to cover on both flanks.

Ibrahima Konate has already suffered with some injuries this term but seems to have gotten through them for now.

Only time will tell whether the Reds dip into the market during January.

However, another long-term injury to any of Jurgen Klopp’s senior defenders may leave the German wishing he had bought in an extra body.
