Liverpool are facing serious competition in their pursuit of their long-term goalkeeper target, Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Reds are credited with serious interest in the Valencia goalkeeper, with the Georgian goalkeeper being one of the few names linked with a move to Anfield this window.
According to several reports including a recent report from Spain, Liverpool want Mamardashvili as they see him as a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker.
Although Alisson is the certified number one at the club, his long term future has also been the subject of speculation.
The Brazilian has being seriously courted by Saudi Arabian clubs in the past, but Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Alisson is set to stay at Liverpool for now.
However, that doesn’t mean that Liverpool aren’t in the market for a new ‘keeper. The club are said to be preparing and identifying a long-term successor in case Alisson departs the club.
La Liga giants want Giorgi Mamardashvili
However, Arne Slot’s men may have to battle another rival for the signature of Mamardashvili.
In today’s print version Valencian-based newspaper Superdeporte, it has been reported that Atletico Madrid are also keen on signing Mamardashvili.
Like Liverpool, the Spanish giants want a long-term replacement for their long-serving goalie Jan Oblak and have joined the race for the 23-year-old Georgian shot stopper.
According to the newspaper, Atletico are ready to do battle with Liverpool for the services of the goalkeeper with Valencia open to a deal.
Despite only recently bursting into the limelight, Giorgi Mamardashvili is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world already.
The 23-year-old is famed for his commanding presence in the box, excellent reflexes, and strong aerial ability. This was best exemplified by his performances for Georgia in UEFA Euro 2024.
It’s likely that any Liverpool move for Mamardashvili this summer will depend on if either Alisson Becker or Caoimhin Kelleher leaves this summer.
With that in mind, Atletico could steal a march and look to keep the player in Spain instead.
