It was previously reported that Liverpool were interested in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz had an outstanding season for the Bundesliga side, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 times in 32 games.

The 20-year old midfielder played a crucial role in helping Xabi Alonso’s team go unbeaten throughout the entire league season, earning them the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

The youngster continued his prolific form throughout the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament for the German national team.

Wirtz scored twice in five appearances during the tournament, one of which came in a crucial moment against Spain in the Quarter-final.

WIRTZ PROVIDES AN UPDATE ON HIS FUTURE PLANS

According to Bulinews Wirtz had opened up on his ambitions ahead of the upcoming season.

When asked about his future at the club, “I don’t have a timetable, so I don’t even have an idea in my head as far as that’s concerned,” said Wirtz.

“I’m just really happy to be back playing football after the summer break. Right now I’m just trying to achieve my goals with the team. Then we’ll see what happens at some point – but I don’t have a timetable.” added the German midfielder.

It looks like for the moment, Wirtz is focusing on preparing for the upcoming season with his teammates at Bayer Leverkusen.

There still might be hope for Liverpool fans because the German did not completely rule out a potential move in the future but it looks like for the short-term he is happy to play another season under Xabi Alonso.

The midfielder is still only 20 years old, hence if Liverpool continue their pursuit for the German, even in a season or two he might still be a good fit for Slot’s side.
