Previous Liverpool target Piero Hincapie now ‘open to a new challenge’

Florian Plettenberg has reported that previously linked Liverpool target Piero Hincapie is now open to a new challenge this summer.

Florian Plettenberg has reported that Bayer Leverkusen defender and former Liverpool target Piero Hincapie is now open to a new challenge this summer.

Liverpool’s interest in the Ecuadorian center-back was a significant storyline during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Despite numerous reports linking the defender to the Reds, a move never materialized.

Liverpool was keen on strengthening their defense and saw Hincapie as a potential target due to his performances in the Bundesliga.

However, the Reds ultimately prioritized midfield reinforcements over defensive signings during that period, leading to no formal approach for Hincapie despite ongoing speculation.

The defender played a played his role in Leverkusen’s campaign, helping the team maintain a strong defensive record in the Bundesliga.

However, he was not always a starter for Xabi Alonso and only 11 of his 26 Bundesliga appearances were in the starting XI.

It then seems that the Ecuador international is seeking pastures anew for more game-time – although whether he would be able to get this at Liverpool is another question.

The Sky Germany transfer journalist revealed that Piero Hincapie is ‘open to a new challenge’

Taking to X, he writes:

“Piero Hincapie, one to watch now as the 22 y/o defender could leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen in August!”

“Hincapie is open for a new challenge as he wants to be a regular starter next season. There are inquiries and talks with other top clubs. But no agreements yet.”

There is no doubt that Liverpool need to refresh their backline sooner rather than later.

Virgil van Dijk is now 33 and not getting any younger, while Ibrahima Konate’s injury record leave a lot to be desired.

The emergence of Jarell Quansah has done a lot to ease concerns in the heart of defense, but fresh legs in that position should be priority area.

Arne Slot’s men are one injury away from having some issues at the back, and with the return of Champions League football, the Dutchman should be afforded a big a squad as possible.

While Liverpool did not secure his services in the summer of 2023, the possibility of future negotiations remains open, especially as the club continues to monitor defensive reinforcements.

Overall, Piero Hincapié’s 2023/24 season at Bayer Leverkusen solidified his reputation as a promising defender with a bright future ahead, and his name is likely to surface again in transfer discussions as clubs look to bolster their defensive options.
